Eclipse: Public Qualities

How can interaction designers approach designing for “the public”, where the audience holds a diverse and dynamic range of interpretations and associations? How do these issues manifest in the context of social or cultural institutions where people’s experiences of interpretation are implicitly and explicitly mediated (and curated) by the institution itself? And, what role could a non-human perspective play in de-centering the curatorial gaze and open new opportunities for interpretation and speculation among the audience? We are exploring these questions through a collaboration with the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. Using the Eclipse method, we have been collecting the subjective experiences of visitors to the AGO, and using these materials to guide ongoing design explorations.
