Community Gardens

Community gardens are places where people grow food for themselves and others. They are places that foster a strong sense of collaboration by a local group of volunteers. This project is to understand the collaborative acts by community gardeners and explore the opportunities and challenges for designing technologies to support them. In the Spring of 2013, we conducted observations of six community garden activities and interviewed ten community gardeners. Through analyzing the data we collected, we had a better understanding of the unique nature of collaboration in community gardens and further raised the notion of “community collaboration” that differs from “workplace collaboration”. This project also enabled us to comprehend the issues for designing technologies for community collaboration in the setting of community gardens.
